Wealth? Or/And Death. 财富?或/和死亡
2026
In this piece, I continue my exploration of the relationship between sculpture and the human body. I chose to create a mask that embodies wealth, power, and death simultaneously. The object is intended to evoke the feeling of a funerary artifact, as if it were a burial object belonging to a noble member of the aristocracy.
The hands surrounding the mask are pale, cold, and skeletal in appearance. They wrap around the face, suggesting that the mask's owner is also surrounded by the presence of death. Rather than functioning as a direct threat, these hands create an intimate relationship between the figure and mortality, as if death is constantly accompanying and embracing them.
The long handle extending from the back of the mask, along with its metallic silver finish, symbolizes authority and privilege. Its form resembles a ceremonial scepter or staff, reinforcing associations with political power, social status, and inherited wealth. Through these elements, the piece presents a tension between power and mortality, suggesting that even those with great wealth and influence remain inseparable from death.
